    Port Akdeniz Breaks New Records

Loading and unloading figures at Port Akdeniz in the first seven months of 2009 outperformed those of last year during the same period.
Port Akdeniz (Ortadoğu Antalya Liman Hizmetleri)’s deputy general manager Taner Güngör announced that 121 vessels arrived at Port Akdeniz last month and that 351,664 tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded while also pointing out that in July 2008, the number of vessels was 90 and that 175,058 tons of cargo had been loaded and unloaded. Mr Güngör said that in the first seven months of the current year, a total of 1,421,100 tons of cargo consisting primarily of marble, bulk cargoes, aluminum, cement, chrome clinker, and coal were loaded and unloaded at Port Akdeniz, adding “80% of the cargoes handled at Port Akdeniz are destined for export. Goods shipped from our harbor are being sent to such countries as Syria, Egypt, Cameroon, Angola, Libya, France, and Italy.
Noting that 1,213,370 tons of cargo were loaded and unloaded during the same period of the previous year, Mr. Güngör said “During both the month of July and the first seven months of the current year, we broke our cargo handling records at Port Akdeniz.”
Deputy General Manager Taner Güngör said that there was an increase in the number of containers moving through Port Akdeniz, pointing out that although the number of container vessels was down, total tonnage handled was up. In the twelve months to end-2008, a total of 615 container ships called at Port Akdeniz; in the first seven months of 2009, the number already reached 553, said Mr. Güngör, who added that 96,095 TEU containers were loaded/unloaded during the same period.
